Clifton is nestled in a quaint, peaceful valley in Southwest Fairfax County, Virginia, about 25 miles from Washington, D.C. The town of Clifton was established as a postal village in 1869 and was incorporated as a town in 1902. Its early industries were farming, lumber and firewood and crushed soapstone. It is now a quarter-mile square of residences, unique shops and restaurants.
Clifton is a community of Victorian style homes with white picket fences on tree lined streets. There are friendly shops and restaurants and a Town Park. Clifton remains relatively unchanged since its turn-of-the-century roots. The community is very close knit and their spirit shows when they close the streets for an all day festival called "Clifton Days." (So mark your calendar for the second Sunday in October for the Clifton Days event!) But there are many other small town activities and events in Clifton: the Lions Pancake Breakfast, Twilight 5 Mile Run, School's Out Block Party, 4th of July Picnic and Parade, Horse Society Parade, Christmas Candlelight Homes Tour & Children's Holiday Party, Clifton Women's Home Tour, and many more!
Large estates, beautiful rolling hills and horses are familiar scenes of this historic community. Driving down the winding back roads of Clifton you are likely to pass people on horseback. As an equestrian-oriented community, many of the homes feature padlocks for horses. There are also facilities for boarding and many riding trails can be found on the outskirts of town. While the rolling countryside gives you the sense of being in the country, actually you are just minutes away from Washington, D.C. Living in Clifton you can enjoy the peacefulness of the countryside and yet have access to all major transportation arteries, the Metro System, and the Virginia Railway Express (VRE).
